IKEA hails from Sweden and is undoubtably the worlds single largest Furniture Retailer. It was founded in 1943 by a 17 year old Ingvar Kamprad and he originally started selling stationary via Mail Order before expanding his products to many items. In 1948 they started selling furniture and in 1951, IKEA Published their first Catalogue.
In 1956 one of their workers, while transporting a table discovered that he could not fit it ion his vehicle without taking the legs off. He then had the idea that many of their customers might have the same problem? This lead to the production of the first retail furniture item being Flat Packed, it was called the Lovet Side Table. This cost saving idea for IKEA was very successful and self assembly became the cornerstone of their business model.
In 1958 they opened the first physical store inside a warehouse and by 1970 the first expansion outside Scandinavia happened when they opened a store in Switzerland. During the 1970's and 1980's this expansion continued through European Countries and beyond, including Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan and more. During this time a Franchising system was developed to accelerate expansion and also a business ownership structure to ensure business longevity.
Since 2008 they have consistently been ranked upon the largest Furniture Retailers on the world. Their most popular product now is the modest Bill Bookcase, which was first introduced in 1978. It has had a few build changes over the years, but now sells at a rate of one every 6 seconds around the world!
